HHL designed a new system to reface the existing exterior of these 30-year-old laboratory facilities using a new insulated metal panels curtainwall with pivoting windows. The existing steel ‘sandwich’ panels were deteriorating due to building movement and inadequate weather seal at the original fixed windows. With nothing between the inside and outside other than the panels, a new system of girts, studs and sheathing was designed on the exterior walls to accommodate new panels and windows – while enabling the building to be occupied during construction. This photo illustrates the former wall panel and window system on the left, with the new curtainwall and window system on the right.
