This new facility is designed to accommodate all the Bridge Commission’s Maintenance staff and vehicles serving three international bridges in the Niagara region. The building is located adjacent to the Bridge Commission’s Military Road Administrative building. The building envelope is constructed of structural precast concrete panels with a low slope steel truss roof. The precast approach enabled the design for the large, open plan garage and vehicle storage areas with 20-foot ceilings, and without the need for columns. Other spaces include administrative offices, locker rooms, a workshop, and archives.

The design challenge was to create a 20,000 square foot building which would complement the surrounding rural/suburban landscape and not resemble a warehouse. To accomplish this, the building mass and roof were broken into four parts, each with its own scale and fenestration specific to use. Intersecting volumes and differing roof configurations combine to de-emphasize the overall scale.
