HHL Architects developed a master plan for this new research and educational waterfront campus located at the foot of Porter Avenue, also known as Cotter Point. The study included the West Side Rowing Club, the Frank Lloyd Wright Rowing Boat House (which HHL Architects also developed), the Great Lakes Institute and the proposed Buffalo State College Community Maritime Center. The focus of the campus design was environmental education and lakefront recreation.

HHL developed the design for the Great Lakes Teaching Pavilion, which houses the SUNY College at Buffalo Boat Building Program, as well as a Maritime Center. The building capitalizes on the scenic view towards the lake, as well as the orientation with the other elements of the campus. This two-story “green building” uses daylight and geothermal systems to demonstrate environmental consideration.
