HHL Architects was engaged to redesign a new elevator system to replace the multi-level escalators that have been the primary mode of movement within the center of the Library since it’s opening in 1964.

This multi-phase project removed the old elevator and hazardous material, and then the existing hoist way was expanded to allow for two larger elevator cabs. After the elevators were operational, the existing escalators were abated and carefully removed. The void was filled with new floor to allow for greater flexibility of various exhibits, traffic flow, and large group gatherings.
